OnlineForLife: The Church’s Silence On Abortion Is Harmful And Deadly

OnlineForLife.org has a unique approach to saving children from abortion. If you are not familiar with their work, I urge you to visit their website and read up on their unique and impressive approach. You might well consider supporting them once you visit.

It appears that the leaders of this organization are Evangelical Christians and so their visionary message is aimed primarily at fellow Protestant pastors and Christians. A recent posting on their website is outstanding and needs to be shared. The posting starts with a very good video and then outlines what they consider to be “The Church’s Necessary Response to Abortion.”

The Church’s Necessary Response to Abortion

“Church leaders shouldn’t talk about abortion. The Bible doesn’t even mention the word abortion. It’s a political issue and therefore doesn’t warrant any attention in church.”

This is the position of many Protestant churches in America: Don’t talk about abortion, don’t preach about it, and you certainly shouldn’t address it in any official capacity. Yet the future of the pro-life movement is dependent on American churches and parishes being emboldened and educated about what the Bible clearly teaches about life.

Scripture is far from silent on this issue. So my prayer today is that the church, too, will finally end her silence.

The Bible provides a very simple, yet elegant foundation regarding abortion and the church’s involvement in ending it. Consider this three-step apologetic defense for the unborn, provided in question form.

  1.  Is God the creator of all human life?
  2.  If so, does God permit us to end innocent human life?
  3.  If not, does God command the church to protect innocent life?
The following outline provides a basis for our understanding of God’s role in creating human life, what He allows us to do to that life, and what He calls His church to do.

1. Is God the creator of all human life?
In the will and mind of God, there is no such thing as an “unplanned pregnancy.” God is not wringing His hands and groaning every time a couple gets pregnant unexpectedly. God is not surprised by anything because God is sovereign. Psalm 103:19 declares, “The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all.” (NASB)

The Holman Bible Dictionary defines God’s sovereignty this way:

(The) biblical teaching that God possesses all power and is the ruler of all things (Ps. 135:6; Dan. 4:34–35). God rules and works according to His eternal purpose, even through events that seem to contradict or oppose His rule.
